In order to support Katy ISD student’s emotional and social health, the district plans to expand the Character Strong program and hire additional social workers for the upcoming 2020-21 school year.
During the 2019-20 school year, the Character Strong program was implemented at 22 KISD campuses. Teachers and staff will be trained on different areas of mental health in order for the program to be implemented at all schools throughout the district.
The district plans on employing six social workers to focus on student’s emotional well-being. Social workers will collaborate with the school counselors and educational psychologists.
The district reports an increase in the need for social, emotional and mental health support. There have also been legislative changes, such as the passing of House Bill 1026, which requires all public schools to adopt a positive character traits program.
KISD has current resources for families or students in need mental or emotional support during the current pandemic. Visit www.katyisd.org/Pages/Katy-ISD-Health-Update.aspx.
