Katy ISD Foundation Awards Teacher Grants
The Katy ISD Foundation has awarded over 350 Katy ISD teachers at 44 campuses with inspiring imagination teacher grants this year. Funds for grants are raised from local business and community investors as well as Foundation events. The Katy ISD Education Fundation is a non-profit organization which aims to fund innovative classroom instructions outside of the Katy ISD budget.

Katy ISD Enrollment Up Slightly After Storm
Katy ISD had a slight elevation in enrollment following Tropical Storm Harvey, with some students displaced by the devastation inside and outside district boundaries. Total KISD enrollment increased from 77,546 students before the storm to 77,569 students afterward, according to district spokesperson Maria DiPetta. Displaced students can receive assistance through the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, including free breakfast and lunch at school.

Katy ISD Board considers staff salary raises among other topics at preliminary board meeting
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees held a meeting this week featuring many topics to be considered for the regular Board Meeting to be held on June 26. Among the topics discussed was preliminary attendance policies and boundaries for the new elementary school, consideration for a change in the district's drug policy, a staff compensation plan, budget amendments and more. A three percent increase in teacher and staff salaries was proposed for the 2017-18 school year. Many of these topics will be considered at the next board meeting.

Katy Magazine unveils Katy's Top 100 Women
This year, the "Women's Issue" for Katy Magazine featured a list detailing "Katy's Top 100 Women." This list, which included the names of outstanding women in the community, featured over 30 women from Katy ISD, from principals, to teachers, namesakes and district staff members. Katy Magazine unveiled the list when the issue hit the stands and circulated through social media posts.

32nd annual Katy Folk Life Festival to be held April 1
On Saturday, April 1, you can catch a glimpse of what life in the 1800s was like for the early pioneers of Texas at the 32nd annual Katy Folk Life Festival. This event will allow visitors to see how these pioneers dressed, ate and survived in the late 19th century. The Katy Folk Life Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the Kenneth D. Welch Outdoor Learning Center in Katy, and admission is only $1.

Katy ISD's new stadium officially named "Legacy Stadium"
The Katy ISD Board of Trustees recently approved "Legacy Stadium" as the name of the new Student Activity Facility: Second Stadium with a unanimous vote of 7-0. As per the Naming Committee's recommendation, the field itself will be named after Mike Johnston, former coach.
Legacy Stadium, a multi-purpose, state-of-the-art facility, will open in this Fall as part of the Academy Sports + Outdoors Activity Complex.

Katy ISD students take home first place awards at foreign language contest
Katy ISD brought home top honors at the 2017 Farrington Contest and Awards, a foreign language contest hosted by the Houston Area Teachers of Foreign Language. The District had over 30 high school students win awards, including six students brought home first place awards in American Sign Language, Spanish Intermediate, Spanish Advanced, German 3 and German 2. To win these prizes, students completed foreign language exams consisting of reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Unprecedented number of Katy ISD students receive perfect ACT scores
Millions of students across the United States take the ACT exam, a college preparatory test consisting of English, mathematics, science and reading. Of those millions of students, less than one percent receive a perfect score; in Katy ISD, however, seven students received perfect scores. This is an unprecedented number of students for a single district to have, as out of the 2.1 million students who took the test in 2016, only 2,235 received a 36, a perfect score.

Katy ISD student's artwork chosen for NASA space calendar
A drawing by Katy Junior High sixth grader, Sylvie Mei Lim, was recently chosen by NASA to be a part of the 2017 NASA commercial crew space calendar, which will be enjoyed by astronauts while they stay at the International Space Station. Students from India, London, Spain, Portugal and other countries around the world submitted pieces for the calendar, but despite the steep competition, Sylvie Mei Lim's piece was chosen for January 2017. Katy Junior High sixth grader, Drew Alvarez's piece was also chosen as an honorable mention.

Katy ISD receives College Board AP District Honor Roll distinction
Katy ISD was recently notified that the district will be placed on College Board's seventh annual Advanced Placement (AP) District Honor Roll. Katy ISD is one of just 433 schools across not only the United States, but Canada as well, to receive this distinction. Districts receive this honor by increasing access to AP courses and coursework, while also maintaining or increasing the district's percentage of students who earn scores of a 3 or higher on College Board AP Exams.
