Star Cinema Grill plans to expand in the Houston market by opening a theater in the Katy area. Commercial real estate firm Wulfe & Co. announced the company will build a 42,000 square foot theater near the intersection of the Grand Parkway and the Westpark Tollway. The theater is planned to open fall of 2016, will add 150 to 200 new jobs, and will serve areas such as Cinco Ranch, Bella Terra, Richmond and Fulshear. For more information, visit here.
Each year, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announces the winners of the National Merit Scholarships financed by U.S. colleges and universities. This year, NMSC announced approximately 2,200 winners - eight of which were Katy ISD seniors. The Katy ISD National Merit Scholars came from high schools across the district, including Taylor High School, Seven Lakes High School and Cinco Ranch High School. With the track and field season about to swing into full gear, Katy Girls Track and Field Head Coach James Darcey believes his squad might be ready to take a big step in the district meet that is coming up.
“We have had a pretty good little start to the season,” Darcey said. “We have had some girls put together some solid performances already but just like every year you lose some good kids. We had some kids that I thought were going to be difficult to replace but we have been lucky enough to have some younger kids step up and they have competed very hard. The Katy Tigers won District 19 last year and advanced to the area playoffs. After an undefeated non-district season, they are likely the favorite for a repeat championship.
Katy enters district play with an 11-0-2 record, including three tournaments. Along the way, they gave coach Tom McPherson his 700th career victory.
The Tigers finished 5-0-1 at the Katy ISD Tournament, Feb. 26-28, defeating Dulles, Lamar, Cy Woods, Stratford and Ridge Point with a total margin of 36-19.

City of Katy Mayor Fabol Hughes, Councilman Bill Lawton for Ward A and Councilman Jimmy Mendez for Ward B were declared as elected for another term each at the city’s regular meeting held March 9.
All three candidates were running unopposed in the upcoming May election.
The election for their posts was cancelled when no one filed to run against the incumbents by the Feb. 27 deadline.
Hughes was elected Mayor in 2013 with 51 percent of the vote after having first served as a council member for the city.
