Chevron has purchased 103 acres of land off Grand Parkway and Clay Road in Katy, for future use. The oil company does not yet have any specific plans for the site, according to company officials.
“Chevron is simply acquiring the land to give the company future R&D facilities flexibility as we grow and expand our presence in the greater Houston area,” said Justin
Higgs, spokesperson for Chevron. “No specific use or employee decisions have been made as it pertains to this location.”
Chevron officially closes on the land in the third quarter of 2014.

LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch will celebrate its second new store in a three-week period when Torchy’s Tacos opens June 12. Langford Market, a Houston-based fashion boutique opened on May 24.
Torchy’s Tacos announced its LaCenterra location early in 2014. The Austin-based Tex-Mex chain offers a variety of specialty tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The LaCenterra location will offer local craft beers from Katy’s No Label Brewery and Houston’s Karbach and St. Arnold breweries.

High school students taking the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness end-of-course exams have had a lighter load this year as the Texas Legislature implemented changes reducing the number of tests that will be administered.
The reduction in the number of tests is a move local administrators said will lessen the burden on teachers and students and put the emphasis back on subject matter mastery rather than test preparation.

The Katy girls' 4x200 medley relay team set a new school record at the Texas Relays held this past weekend in Austin. The team of Omri Brown, Deja Phillips, Tristan Sowell and Amari Johnson set the record time during the elite track meet.
The Katy City Council approved the appointment of Byron Hebert as city administrator at its March 24 meeting. Hebert, who served as Katy’s Director of Finance prior to this appointment, replaces Johnny Nelson. Nelson retired as city administrator after 20 years in the office.
Since his tenure began in 1994. Nelson has seen Katy through significant growth and development, and was one of key players in bringing the Katy Mills Mall into being, Mayor Hughes said in his proclamation recognizing Nelson’s retirement. New voter identification laws in Texas—passed by the state Legislature in 2011—will be enforced in the November 2013 election. The laws are being enforced by Attorney General Greg Abbott on the heels of a June 25 Supreme Court decision striking down a key part of the Voting Rights Act.
